TKI

Please note: These links were valid
when this page was posted. However the Web is very volatile, and TKI has
no control over outside websites. Please let us know if you find a broken
link or if you have an update for a link. Te Kete Ipurangi recommends
that teachers view all websites we link to before using them with students.

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world at over 155 million
square kilometres – covering one third of the world's surface. The
ocean is home to thousands of islands and many different nations, physical
geographies, languages, and cultures – including Melanesian, Micronesian,
and Polynesian.
From the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands in the north-west Pacific
Ocean to Pitcairn in the south-east, there's a lot more to Pacific nations
than sun, surf, and sandy beaches.
Although less than 0.1 percent of the world's population lives in the
Pacific area, over one third of the world's languages are Pacific languages.
For example, around 700 languages are spoken in Papua New Guinea.
This Hot Topic collects websites on some of our many Pacific neighbours.
