Tsunami in Asia
TKI Hot Topic for January 2005
A tsunami struck several countries in Asia on 26 December 2004. The devastation
and loss of life caused by the tsunami has made it the worst natural disaster
of recent times. This TKI Hot Topic lists a number of lesson ideas and websites
that you can use to address the tsunami with your students.
What New Zealand is doing to help
The New Zealand Government has pledged $68 million dollars towards the ongoing
relief and reconstruction effort in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and
Sri Lanka. This is the largest amount ever given by New Zealand towards emergency
foreign aid.
Alternatively, students could get out their pens and paper and write a holiday
journal, documenting and describing their different holiday experiences.
Staying with the writing theme, writing a movie review is another option, profiling
one of the big movies coming out over summer – e.g. The Return of
the King and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban –
and looking for opportunities to publish the review in local newspapers, writing
and news sites for young people, or even in a school newspaper when school starts
again in 2004.
The summer holiday is also a great time to relax with a book. Look at some
sites below that suggest reading options for different ages and reading levels.
Keeping safe and well over summer
Some of the best things about summer – sun, swimming, and barbeques – have
the unfortunate potential to be dangerous. Sunburn, sunstroke, food poisoning,
and drowning are things that you definitely want to avoid! The upside is that
it's easy to stay safe this summer. Check out some of the previous Hot Topics
included below for advice on food preparation and storage; selecting places
to swim and rules in the water; and covering up with sunscreen, a shirt, and
a hat.
Educating your students about summer safety is your first step to ensuring
that they have a great time over the holidays.
