1. Meet with relevant staff members to form a review committee and decide on a draft long-term plan that includes a process for review.    
2. Identify staff responsibilities for teaching and advising about the health and physical education curriculum, including about the key areas of learning.    
3. Finalise and record the review plan.    
4. Inform the school community about this essential learning area and set dates for community consultations. See 'Legislation on health education' about the consultation required in health education.    

5. Identify and list the students' needs and targets for achievement after reading current research on relevant issues for young New Zealanders and consulting with:

  • students and staff
  • parents and caregivers
  • the board of trustees
  • the wider local community.
   
6. Consult with staff to establish their professional development needs. Identify potential sources of support such as current Ministry of Education initiatives and subject associations.    
7. Review or develop school policies or statements that support the curriculum statement.    
8. Review existing programmes or units of work to identify those that should be modified in the light of new information.    
9. Collaboratively review the current long-term, school-wide plan for a programme that provides for teaching and learning in all the key areas of learning.    
10. Consult with other staff about this programme plan. Set dates for departments or syndicates to provide feedback.    
11. Develop new units of work and adapt existing units of work to provide students with quality learning opportunities based on the curriculum.    
12. Trial, evaluate, and modify planned units of work.    
13. Evaluate the ways in which the school and its learning programmes are meeting the needs of its students. Check the learning programmes against the original list of identified needs and make any necessary modifications.    
14. Report to the board of trustees (via the principal) on staff professional development needs, and recommend staff appointments and resources.    
15. Finalise the school's long-term plan and set a date for reviewing it (for example, in two years' time).
