Anti-virus deal FAQs
15 April 2007
Description
The Ministry of Education has renewed the agreement with IBM to provide CA security software to schools.
- What is contained in the deal for schools?
All state and state-integrated schools in New Zealand will receive continue to anti-virus software at no cost. In addition an anti-spyware product will be included. The product will continue to be from CA (http://www.ca.com). The new name for the product is CA ITM 8.1 (Integrated Threat Management). The name change reflects the two products being included in the one package.
- For how long does the deal last?
This agreement will expire December 31 2009.
- What platforms are covered?
Windows desktops, Windows NT/2000/2003 Server, Exchange 5.5/2000, Novell Netware versions 3.x - 6.x, Linux, plus a variety of plug-ins for Apache/ISA servers, Macintosh.
- Does the deal cover home use?
All school staff will continue to be able to use the software on their home computers for the duration of the contract. They will use their school license code to enable the product.
- Who is delivering the deal to schools?
IBM New Zealand will continue to deploy the software to schools. IBM New Zealand has a national support network and has already successfully delivered this particular solution to a large number of New Zealand schools.
- How do we get the software?
There is a new URL for registration - http://www.av4schools.co.nz. As this is a new agreement schools will need to re-register.
IBM are currently building a new version of the DVD to send to schools. This should be available within the next couple of months.
Versions of this software are available for download from the CA website. Schools should note that only the customised IBM DVD will be supported by the ICT Helpdesk for Schools. The Ministry recommends that schools install only the supported version.
- What about Independent schools?
Independent schools are able to purchase the software at the same price the Ministry of Education has negotiated with IBM. This is similar to the provisions in the current Microsoft agreement. Independent schools should visit http://www.independent.school.nz/contactus/index.html and ask how to register for the eTrust Antivirus software through the Ministry of Education's deal with IBM.
