Accessibility – StickyKeys

Description
StickyKeys is an accessibility feature designed for people
who have difficulty holding down two or more keys at a time.
When a shortcut requires a key combination such as CTRL+P
(print), StickyKeys will enable you to press one key at a
time instead of pressing them simultaneously.
Instruction
This procedure tells you how to turn on StickyKeys through Accessibility Options
in Control Panel using Windows platform.

On the Start menu:

Display the Start menu by pressing CTRL+ESC (or the Windows logo key ).
- Select Control Panel by pressing C.

In Control Panel:
- Classic View (all Control Panel icons are showing).
- If not, under Control Panel in the left pane, select Switch to Classic View.
- Select Accessibility Options.

In Control Panel:
- You need to be in Classic View (all Control Panel icons
are showing).
- If not, under Control Panel in the left pane, select Switch
to Classic View by pressing TAB.
- Press ENTER.
- Press the RIGHT ARROW key, and then the LEFT ARROW key to select Accessibility
Options.
- Press ENTER.

In the Accessibility Options dialog box, on the Keyboard tab:
To turn on StickyKeys:
- Select the Use StickyKeys check box.
Note: To turn off StickyKeys, clear the Use StickyKeys check box. |

- Select Settings by pressing S.

In the Settings for StickyKeys dialog box:
- Select the options you want by selecting or clearing the check boxes.
- Select OK twice to save the settings and exit Accessibility Options.

- Select options by pressing the underlined access keys (see notes below).
- Press ENTER twice to save the settings and exit Accessibility Options.

Notes
When StickyKeys is active an icon appears at the lower right of the screen (the
system tray) beside the clock and is made up of 4 small black squares.

These represent the "windows modifier keys" i.e.

The squares will become filled (black) when one of the modifier keys is "being
sticky" i.e. electronically held down.

Settings

Application
- Users with reduced hand function – range of movement, difficulty isolating
fingers for typing
- Those who can only access the keyboard with one hand
- Users who are unfamiliar with keyboard layout
- Anyone who needs to use keyboard shortcuts – i.e. visually impaired
user; OOS requiring alternative to constant mouse use
- Caution – some users have experienced confusion when StickyKeys is active
through apparent creation of desktop icons (shortcuts)
- This can occur when using the mouse to move an icon onscreen if StickyKeys is "holding" the CTRL key down
- Check to ensure that none of the squares are highlighted

- To turn them off, press the key that the square represents "twice",
i.e. CTRL, CTRL
- Likewise, some users have experienced confusion when trying to select icons
on screen as they click one icon and then click the mouse elsewhere but other
icons also become selected (highlighted). This occurs when StickyKeys is "holding"
the shift key down
- Check to ensure that none of the squares are highlighted
- To turn them off, press the key that the square represents "twice",
i.e. shift, shift
