All About Me

This resource has a social studies curriculum base, with "all about me" as a theme. It focuses on the social organisation and processes strand. It includes the use of a digital camera and a spreadsheet. It was developed by Te Rapa Cluster as part of the ICT Professional Development Clusters project.

Achievement objectives

Identify the group they belong to and describe the needs that each group meets.
Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this unit students will be able to:
  • show confidence when relating to others;
  • show concern to others; and
  • share feelings with others.

Learning experiences
  • Discuss and brainstorm about their families – who is in their family, what are the differences and similarities?

  • Discuss relationships – compare home and school with others.

  • Discuss routines and how to cope in different situations.

  • Discuss and decide on class rules. Brainstorm why we need these.

  • Compare rules we have at home with rules we have at school. What is different?

  • Make family trees.

  • Use spreadsheets and graphs to record and display information.

  • Discuss pets.

  • Discuss favourites – likes and dislikes.

  • Make a poster titled All About Me using a desktop publishing program.

  • Use a digital camera to take photographs of each other.

  • Write "I can" statements.

  • Write "I am special because..." statements.

Art

Observational drawings: Developing Ideas in Visual Arts

  • Children draw themselves (head only) adding relevant details, and show some use of shading, light, and dark.

  • The children use skills in observation when attempting drawings.

  • Discuss use of pencil, what we see, how to look carefully.

  • Use a mirror to make personal observations.
