Creating Cloze Exercises
This ICT starter idea written by teachers, for teachers, is about creating
cloze exercises using drop-down boxes in a text document.
Curriculum reference
English
Prerequisites
Knowledge of a word processing program. (The process recorded here is using Word.)
Resources
Word processing program, for example:
- Microsoft Word
- Corel Word Perfect
Possible context
- Use any story used in a reading programme from shared through to independent approach, or written by students.
- Exercises in parts of speech for example, verbs, nouns etc.
- Synonym or antonym exercises
Suggested process
- Open up a word processing document.
- Type in the text and at the point you want to insert the drop
down box.
- Go to View – Toolbars – Forms – Drop down form.
- Double click this and then proceed to add in your choices of
words.
- Highlight and change the colour of the font to make it easier
to see.
- You need to leave at least 5 spaces between this and the next
word.
- Protect the document: Tools – Protect document – Forms (you
can choose whether a password is necessary or not). – At
this stage an arrow appears next to the word, which when clicked
on shows a list of the words that you have entered as a choice.
Protecting the sheet also means it can be used without the fear
of users corrupting the exercise.
Further considerations
Students could send it to users as an email attachment.
