Publish It Locally

This ICT starter idea written by teachers, for teachers, describes how students could send prepared stories, articles, and information of interest to a local paper for publishing purposes.

Curriculum reference
English – written/viewing and presenting

Prerequisites

  • Access to email/fax
  • Basic understanding of how to send email/fax
  • Prepared written material for emailing/faxing

Resources

  • Stories of interest/selected pieces
  • School events/activities/articles

Possible context

  • Themes of choice or interest
  • Local, school, or community activities
  • Celebrating success

Suggested process

  1. Find out whether or not your local/community paper has a Children's/Young Person's Page or space. If not, suggest that they create a space.
  2. Discuss the criteria for selection processes with class.
  3. Obtain email/fax address for your local children's page editor.
  4. Check out how your paper wishes to receive your publications.

Note: Most papers will not allow you to send the children's published work as an attachment. The body of the published piece needs to be copied into the body of the email.

This same publication process can work if you have access to fax. Send printed pieces off as is.

Next stage
If you have access to a digital camera, try sending supporting photographs (as jpeg's, email only)
