Planning a Class Trip

This ICT starter idea written by teachers, for teachers, describes how students could use ICT to design and plan a trip, including equipment/food lists, budgets, and organisational aspects.

Curriculum reference
Mathematics – numerical literacy (looking at spreadsheets)

Prerequisites

  • To be able use a spreadsheet
  • To be able to use email/phone/fax
  • To be able to follow a planning process

Resources

  • A spreadsheet program
  • Access to email/phone/fax
  • Printer

Possible context
Social Studies – how people organise themselves and use their leisure/recreational time

Suggested process

  1. Send out initial letter to parents.
  2. Brainstorm all the possible places where the class could go.
  3. Select realistic ones.
  4. Brainstorm and sequence the things that need to be planned out.
  5. Research costs using phone/etc. and create a budget using a spreadsheet.
  6. Research comparison costs for alternative venues, equipment, food, etc.
  7. Decide on the most cost effective options and communicate these to parents.

Other suggestions

  • Planning school camps
  • Design a structure for planning school trips that can be used for all trips.
  • Do a RAMS (Risk Assessment Management System) assessment on the trip.
  • Price other events (for example, a meal, a family holiday).
