Snapshot of learning for MaxCount (Max's Toolbox)

These four screen shots were taken from learning sessions using MaxCount, part of the Max's Toolbox suite, with year 1 and 2 students

MaxCount is a child-orientated interface for Microsoft Excel. The software was used as part of a classroom mathematics programme, as a teaching tool and reinforcement activity. Depending on what was happening in the programme, students either completed set activities or were able to use MaxCount as a personal choice activity. The software was also used to target a group of reluctant learners who initially had little focus at mathematics time.

During a statistics unit the students used maxcount to collect and record class data. Here the students are using one of the preset templates to record the different ways the students travel to school. Entries are recorded by clicking on the appropriate picture icon and the graph is updated automatically.

Students used the auto shapes tool to construct shape pictures. This student is following the instruction to "use three triangles, two squares and one hexagon". Some students went on to use the pictures as a plan to construct the image with attribute blocks.

MaxPaint is available from within MaxCount. Using the auto-shapes tool, this student is identifying shapes from statements (for example "I have 5 sides") and drawing with the shape. The shape is automatically inserted into the paint canvas.

To support number recognition, the students used word art to create large numbers and added the appropriate number of clip art or shapes.

All students found MaxCount motivating to use.
