Snapshot of learning for MaxShow (Max's Toolbox)

These four screen shots were taken from learning sessions using MaxShow for Microsoft PowerPoint, part of the Max's Toolbox suite, with year 2 students.

MaxShow was used during an integrated unit of work on the weather. The class completed a range of activities across the curriculum areas, including using MaxShow, which they had used prior to this unit, as one way to express themselves.

These screen shots are from an activity where the students are producing a collaborative slide show based on their writing about weather experiences. The students discussed their experiences in groups and talked about what they would draw and write about.

In this screen shot the student has clicked on the MaxPaint link and is illustrating his weather experience. The teacher encouraged the students to begin with basic drawing tools to make closed curves which could be filled with colour.

Following discussion to clarify the student writing, text was added in a text box. The student is formatting the text using the size slider the font chooser tools.

Students used sound and voice to add to their message. A rain sound, made with percussion instruments, is being recorded as background to the picture.

The final work was presented to the class, other groups in the school, and to parents on interview night. During playback, in addition to the recorded sounds playing, the text is also read aloud by a cartoon character. In the classroom the students re-visited the work during literacy time and used the navigation buttons to view the show at their own pace.

The students found the program easy to use and were able to easily choose options using large clear buttons and sliders. They particularly enjoyed the text reading and sound feature.

The teacher noticed the increased motivation for students to write using MaxShow.
