Cover of printed edition of NZSL in the New Zealand Curriculum

NZSL is an official language under the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006.

These curriculum guidelines set the direction for teaching and learning New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL). They contain guidance for teachers in early childhood settings and schools who wish to plan and implement NZSL programmes with their students.

The curriculum positions NZSL as a language of choice alongside other languages offered in mainstream schooling, that is, as a language that can be learned by hearing students.

The printed edition was published in 2006 by Learning Media for the New Zealand Ministry of Education. (The printed edition has Learning Media item number 31373.)

Following its launch in Parliament by the Minister of Education, the Hon Steve Maharey, on 15 March 2007, a print copy was sent to early childhood centres and schools.
