Introduction to the Learning Languages Series
The Learning Languages Series (LLS) provides multi-media materials designed for teachers and students who are new to language learning. The series is designed for years 7 and 8 students and supports Levels 1 and 2 achievement objectives in the curriculum of the respective languages.
Name change
This series was originally called the International Languages Series (ILS), and most of the published materials used in schools carry this name. The series name was changed to the Learning Languages Series (LLS) in January 2005 to reflect the work being undertaken to develop Learning Languages as a new learning area within the New Zealand Curriculum Project. The new learning area encompasses te reo Māori, Latin, New Zealand Sign Language, and a range of Pacific, Asian and European languages. Work is underway to develop multi-media materials for teachers and students of years 7 and 8 for te reo Māori. Other languages may follow.
Purpose of website
The purpose of the LLS website is to provide supplementary materials to support the course materials. Each language course comprises two folders of printed units for both students and teachers, a video, and audio CD recordings.
This website is made up of sub-sites that contain supplementary material for each of the current LLS courses. The material provided online includes:
- descriptions of the components of each course, plus instructions on how to obtain copies
- instructions on how to play the language games shown in the video entitled 'An introduction to the International Language Series'
- additional learning activities that support those in the units
- tips for teachers to make the best use of the materials. These include, information on other resources; assessment practices; using computers; lists of authentic names in the language for students to adopt; and other useful websites. There are also ideas on how to integrate birthday and other festival traditions into the teaching programme.
