Instructions
In this version of joining the dots, you call out the dot numbers in Japanese – in the sequence given below – and the students draw the picture by joining the dots n the order they are called.
Materials
To download the template for the dog picture, select from the following Word or PDF formats:

Make one copy for each student.
Steps
- Give a copy of the dog template to each student.
- Call the first two numbers (in Japanese), pausing to let the students find the corresponding dots and draw the connecting lines.
- Call the next number in the sequence, checking that everyone is keeping up. If necessary, call the number several times.
- Repeat until all numbers are called and all students have completed the picture.

Tips
- Tick the numbers off as you call them.
- Have the students repeat the number aloud as they look for it.
Variations
- Ask individual students to anticipate the next four numbers (in Japanese).
- To reinforce number knowledge, divide class into small groups and have the group members take turns reading out sequences of numbers to their group.
Further learning
- Use hiragana symbols in place of the numbers.
- Write the numbers in kanji.
