Instructions

Like traditional dominoes, the cards for this game are divided in two. However, instead of dots at both ends, this game uses the Chinese word (in pinyin) for a number at one end. The aim of the game is to match the Chinese word on one card with the corresponding number of dots on another card.

Materials

Each group of students needs one set of 10 domino cards. To download the template for the dominoes, select from the following Word or PDF formats:

Steps
  1. Shuffle the domino cards and give one to each student in the group, with the remainder of the dominoes placed face down in the middle of the table (forming the 'pool').
  2. One player starts the game by laying down a domino and counting the number of dots aloud in Chinese.
  3. If the next player has the matching pinyin on their domino, they respond by repeating the word and laying down their domino next to the first one.
  4. However, if this player does not have the correct number, they take a domino from the pool.
  5. The next player in the circle now places their domino if they have the correct word, or pick up another card from the pool if they don't.
  6. The game continues until all of the dominoes have been correctly placed. The winner is the player who finishes first.
