Ja! An introduction to German supplementary material
This website provides supplementary material to support the Learning Languages Series German course, entitled Ja! An introduction to German. This course is designed for years 7 and 8 students, and supports the German in the New
Zealand Curriculum achievement objectives for level 1 and level 2.
For some teachers, this course may be their first experience of teaching and learning another language. The Learning Languages Series has been designed to encourage teachers to adopt the role of facilitator in the classroom, so that they learn alongside their students.
Website contents
The 'Introduction' section describes the contents of the Ja! course and explains how to obtain copies of each of the components of the kit. It also gives instructions on how to play the language games shown in the video entitled 'An introduction to the International Language Series'. [Note that this series was originally called the International Languages Series (ILS), and most of the published materials used in schools still carry this name.]
The 'Learning activities' section provides 16 extra activities that can be used in the classroom in conjunction with specific units in the Ja! course.
The 'Tips for teachers' section provides information for teachers to make the best use of the materials in the Ja! course. This includes information on other resources, assessment, useful websites, and using computers, plus lists of authentic names for students to adopt. There are also ideas on how to integrate birthday and other festival traditions into the teaching programme.
