Instructions
For this version of bingo, numbers between 1–30 are called in French. The objective is to be first to complete a row, column, or full card of called numbers.
Materials
Have students make a bingo card (grid) each, which contains 10 squares. They then fill the squares with any numerals from 1–30, with no double-ups allowed.
Following is a randomly ordered list of the numbers 1–30 to use for the first game. Tick them off as you call them.
Random numbers for bingo:
| 26 | vingt-six | 25 | vingt-cinq | 8 | huit | 2 | deux |
| 7 | sept | 16 | seize | 24 | vingt-quatre | 12 | douze |
| 21 | vingt-et-un | 29 | vingt-neuf | 17 | dix-sept | 4 | quatre |
| 15 | quinze | 22 | vingt-deux | 1 | un | 11 | onze |
| 20 | vingt | 6 | six | 27 | vingt-sept | 3 | trois |
| 13 | treize | 19 | dix-neuf | 14 | quatorze | 9 | neuf |
| 10 | dix | 23 | vingt-trois | 28 | vingt-huit | 30 | trente |
| 18 | dix-huit | 5 | cinq |
Steps
- Decide and tell the class what their objective is for this particular game – a row, column, or full card of numbers.
- Call out a randomly selected number in French.
- Students search for that number on their bingo card. If they have the number, they cross it off.
- Repeat process until the winning student achieves the pre-arranged row, column, or full card.
Tips
- For the words 1–30 in French, see pages 92, 173 and 251 in the Oui! folder.
- As the students become accustomed to the game, try calling out more numbers per minute. The faster you call out the numbers, the faster the students have to think in French.
- To prevent the need to make new bingo cards for each game, collect and laminate the cards made by the students to form a class set. Provide water-based pens or counters (such as buttons) for students to mark/cover the numbers.
- For calling further games, make/obtain counters numbered 1–30 and randomly choose them from a jar.
Variations
- For a faster, easier version of bingo, ask students to write down four or five numerals or French words from a larger selection. They then cross out each word or number as it is called. The winner is the first to run out of numerals/words.
- Using two dice, the students add aloud the two numbers in French, and then cover the resulting number on a bingo card containing the numbers 1–12. Examples of sums:
- Quatre plus trois font sept.
Four plus three makes seven. - Deux plus six font huit.
Two plus six makes eight.
- Quatre plus trois font sept.
Further learning
- Students take turns calling the numbers in French for the rest of the class or within groups.
