Number dominoes

Instructions

Like traditional dominoes, the cards for this game are divided in two. However instead of dots at both ends, this game uses the Spanish word for a number at one end. The aim of the game is to match the Spanish word on one card with the corresponding number of dots on another card.

Each group of students needs a set of 10 domino cards.

Steps
  1. The domino cards are shuffled and the students are given one each, with the remainder placed face down in the middle of the table.
  2. One player starts the game by laying down a domino and speaking the number of dots in Spanish.
  3. If the next player has that word on their domino, they respond by repeating it and laying down their domino next to the first one. If this player does not have the correct number, they have to take a domino from the centre.
  4. The game continues until all of the dominoes have been placed. The winner is the player who finishes first.

Variations

This activity can also be played in pairs, with each student starting the game with five dominoes, or in a group of five, with each player starting with two dominoes.

Further learning

Human dominoes
  1. Students are given one domino each.
  2. The first student speaks the numbers on their domino and stands in a cleared area.
  3. A student with one of those numbers stands beside this first student and then calls out their other number.
  4. This continues until all students are standing in a circle.
Spanish sums

Pairs of students recite simple maths equations to each other in Spanish, using the numbers on each domino card. For example:

Chain game

A game for a group.

  1. Each student is dealt one card.
  2. The first player reads out an equation from the numbers on their domino, and the player with the answering number calls it out.
  3. This player with the answer then becomes caller, and so on around all the group.
