School stories

Developing language learning programmes in schools

The stories in this collection are case studies of some of the schools that have received direct funding from the Learning Languages Funding Pool (formerly the Second Language Learning Funding Pool) between 2002 and 2004. This fund has since been disestablished.

The Learning Languages Funding Pool was established in 1999 as a contestable pool to support the teaching and learning of second languages in years 7–10. This funding pool formed part of the learning languages strategy developed by the Ministry of Education.

Between 2002 and 2004, direct funding from the Funding Pool was awarded annually to selected schools. There are therefore three series of school stories, one for each year.

In the stories, key school staff describe how their language programmes came about and how the programmes evolved with assistance from the Funding Pool. Each story differs from the others but all have in common a passion for language teaching and student learning.
