"Feed the Mind": Campaign Overview

"Feed the Mind" is a multi-media public campaign offering ideas on how to help young children learn.

The campaign has been running since May 1999, and consists of:

  • TV advertisments,
  • radio ads,
  • billboards and bus shelter posters,
  • household deliveries of tips on how to help children learn, and
  • pamphlets for parents

The simple message of the campign has been that there are lots of everyday things that you can do with your children (at home, at the shops, in the car, at the beach) that can make a very real difference to their learning.

Research was conducted before and after the multi-media Feed the Mind campaign across over 600 households throughout New Zealand. It showed comprehensive success in lifting the confidence and competence of adults in helping young children with reading, writing, and number skills.

Here is a summary of the printed publications that are available as a result of the Feed the Mind campaign. Some of the pamphlets have been published in Pasifika languages, as well as in English.

The dual text pamphlets

The pamphlets give quick tips for parents to help their children develop basic numeracy and literacy skills in everyday situations. These dual-text items all combine English with a version in Māori or one of five Pasifika languages.

Pamphlets for parents of new entrant children

These four attractively illustrated, user-friendly pamphlets provide encouragement and guidance by suggesting ideas and strategies that parents can use to help their children learn. They have been translated into five Pasifika languages. The titles in English are:

  • How can we help our children to read the books they bring home from school?
  • How can we help our children learn to write?
  • How can we help our children to become better speakers and listeners?
  • How can we help our 5-year-old children to learn maths?

Pamphlets for parents of children at early childhood centres

These pamphlets are similar to those for parents of new entrants, but focus on strategies to support children under 5 years if age. They are being translated into te reo Māori and Pasifika languages. The titles in English are:

Posters

The pamphlets for parents of children at early childhood centres have been made into A3-sized posters. The four posters focus on reading, writing, listening and talking, and mathematics. They are being produced in Māori versions for kōhanga reo.
