What to do ...
Why?
Use lots of words:
- general words
- specific words
- words about a topic.
The more words a child knows, the more language that child has for talking, reading, writing, and shaping ideas.
Speak the whole idea – use full sentences as much as possible.
A child needs to understand how words work together to shape a whole idea or concept.
You talk, and your child talks.
You ask questions, and your child asks questions.
You think and develop ideas, and your child thinks and develops ideas.
Your child needs to learn from you, and your child also needs to try out new language and ideas.
Make the talking and the learning fun, loving, and meaningful for you and your child.
A child who hears rich language tries out, learns, and uses this rich language. Using rich language helps children to learn – easily, naturally, any time at all.
Talking with children is for everyone:
- grandparents
- uncles and aunts
- sisters and brothers
- neighbours and visitors
- people you meet anywhere.
It's great if everyone helps children to develop their language.
