Teaching and learning materials – literacy

These are some of the teaching and learning materials that have been
developed to give teachers explicit guidance for including literacy in
their classroom programme.
The need for these materials was acknowledged in the Literacy Taskforce
Report, which made the observation:
...that teachers need more assistance than is currently available through
the materials provided. This does not mean step-by-step instructions
for teachers to follow but more detail to help them select and use appropriate
instructional approaches and strategies, particularly those to be used
with children who are in underachieving groups.

The draft Literacy Learning Progressions sets out the specific literacy knowledge and skills that students need if they are to meet the reading and writing demands of the curriculum.
The purpose of Literacy Learning Progression is to provide teachers with a professional tool that shows them what knowledge and skills their students need in order to meet the reading and writing demands of the New Zealand Curriculum. The literacy learning progressions describe the knowledge and skills that students need to have developed at specific points in their schooling if they are to engage with the texts and tasks of the curriculum and make the expected progress.

Guidelines for Integrating
Readymade Commercial Packages Into Teaching Programmes: An evidence-based
approach |
These guidelines
are designed to help teachers and schools to match readymade packages
to learners' needs, and to use them effectively to support teaching practice.
Audio brings variety to literacy programmes and supports the principle
of "the use of a wide range of interesting material, fiction and non-fiction,
in a range of media" (Report of the Literacy Taskforce, page 13).
The recent move to CDs in Ready to Read and the School Journal
means more stories, articles, poems, and plays, better sound quality,
and ease of track selection. For example, Readalong 2001 (item
10337) contains 13 Ready to Read items, many read by children, with sound
effects and backing music.
Electronic storybooks
Electronic storybooks on CD-ROM have been produced to motivate and support
students in their reading. The CD-ROMs contain illustrated texts with
audio, a glossary, and activities. The texts have been adapted from print
series such as the School Journal, the School Journal Story Library, and
the Journal of Young People's Writing. They have been published by Learning
Media Limited. The first three are introduced below, and further storybooks
will be added to the collection.
To enhance teachers’ awareness of the CD-ROM series a pamphlet was distributed in May 2007 to all schools eligible to receive the CD-ROMs. The pamphlet highlights the features and activities on each CD-ROM produced to 2007, along with information on the teachers’ notes that accompany each release. On the back is a helpful list of the content for each CD-ROM, their item numbers, and information on how to order additional copies. Click here to download a PDF of the pamphlet.
The Game and Other Stories (item 26577) and Swimming with Sharks
and other stories (item 27494) are for reluctant readers in years
7 to 10, with a particular emphasis on the interests of Māori and
Pasifika boys.
An online example to illustrate storybooks in the collection is provided

Young People's writing for students in years 5 and 6 who are not proficient

The Game
The CD-ROM and has been distributed to all New Zealand full primary, intermediate
and secondary schools. The Teachers' Notes booklet that came with the
CD-ROM made links to the curriculum, provided ideas for introducing texts,
follow-up discussions, and related learning experiences.
The CD-ROM had a positive impact on students' attitudes to reading and
students' reading achievement as
- students' oral reading fluency and confidence improved significantly;
- it engaged students' interest for the entire four-week period;
- the students rated their enjoyment and interest in using the CD more
highly than their other school reading experiences;
- students' motivation to read the CD-ROM texts carried over into lessons
based on these texts; and
- most students considered that their reading had improved since using
the CD-ROM.
The teachers were enthusiastic about
- the potential of the CD-ROM to engage and support reluctant readers;
and
- the relevance of the CD-ROM to the target audience of Māori
and Pasifika boys, and its potential appeal to other groups of students,
including girls.
Poetry
Shared reading of poetry is highly effective in hooking students into
reading, for exploring new ideas, enriching vocabulary, and developing
student's phonological awareness. It's also great fun! Every School
Journal includes at least one poem.
