An Evaluation of the Use and Integration of Readymade Commercial Literacy Packages into Classroom Programmes

This research identifies effective teacher practice for integrating commercially-produced readymade learning materials into classrooms to meet student learning needs. The research focused on practice with respect to literacy packages but the findings have resonance for other curriculum areas.

Reading Recovery in New Zealand

Read the findings of a study that focused on schools' decisions about offering Reading Recovery and other literacy interventions, and on the implementation of the programme in schools. It also examines the impact of Reading Recovery on Māori and Pasifika students. (PDF 916KB)

Computer-Assisted Learning

Read the review of the literature on computer-assisted learning, particularly its effects on learning outcomes. The evidence regarding the use of computer-assisted learning in literacy and numeracy is assessed, as well as the use of integrated learning systems. The report then looks at evidence from research studies on the value of computer-assisted learning including SuccessMaker. Pre-conditions for effective computer-assisted learning are also examined.

Picking up the Pace: summary

This part of the Ministry of Education website links to the final report on the professional development associated with the Early Childhood Primary Links via Literacy (ECPL) Project. ECPL was in turn part of a broader project, Strengthening Education in Mangere and Otara (SEMO). The full report was released in 2001. A 15-page summary of the report was prepared in 2002.

School Entry Assessment (SEA) report

An Evaluation of the Technical and Methodological Aspects of the School Entry Assessment Kit
School Entry Assessment (SEA) is an instrument designed to assess school-entrants' skills in early literacy, early numeracy, and oral language. It was first introduced in New Zealand schools in 1997. The primary purpose of SEA is to provide diagnostic data for teachers to use to improve student learning. The Australian Council for Educational Research was contracted by the Ministry of Education in 2001 to evaluate the technical and methodological aspects of SEA. The purpose of the evaluation was to provide information which would enhance the collation and analysis of SEA data. The results from this evaluation are contained in the report at

Best Evidence Synthesis (BES) reports

These documents are part of the Ministry of Education's ongoing investment to strengthen the evidence base that informs education policy and practice in New Zealand.
