Resources Needed to Support the Implementation of Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum (May 2005) (PDF 223Kb)
This report looks at what effective second language learning practice and research suggest about the resources needed to support the teaching and learning of te reo Māori.
For year 1–8 students
Current resources for Māori language programmes for years 1 to 8 are available from Learning Media Ltd.
Tihē Mauri Ora!
Published in 1990, the Ministry of Education's syllabus provided a basic framework for teaching Māori language in primary schools. It gives ideas for planning te reo Māori programmes, with suggested themes, settings and topics. The appendices include grammar functions and structures, a section on Māori values, attitudes and behaviour (tikanga Māori) and vocabulary. This syllabus is still a useful guide for primary school teachers who wish to include some Māori language in their classrooms.
Te Ata Hāpara 1, 2, and 3
The Te Ata Hāpara resource (produced circa 1990) is a three-level Māori language course for teachers, each level consisting of a book and three audio cassettes. The three books cover the same 12 topics but at increasing levels of complexity.
Matariki 1, 2, and 3
The Matariki series (produced circa 1990) of books, videos, audio tapes, and activity cards aims to assist teachers in implementing the primary Māori language syllabus Tihē Mauri Ora!. It offers a programme for teaching Māori from years 1 and 8.
