Overview
The Power of the Mind
Te Hiringa i te Mahara is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and has been designed and managed by Gardiner Parata since its inception in June 1998. Through the provision of professional development opportunities and a range of interventions including curriculum resources, Te Hiringa i te Mahara aims to assist in:

- reducing the stress associated with the excessive workload of Māori secondary teachers, in particular te reo Māori teachers
- achieving a positive change in the way Māori secondary teachers view themselves
- building the professional capability of Māori secondary teachers
- achieving better teaching practice outcomes.
Background
Te Hiringa i te Mahara interventions and development opportunities are designed to excite, inspire, invite, encourage and support Māori secondary school teachers to be the best Māori professional teachers they can possibly be for themselves, their students, and their school communities and ultimately to become more powerful actors in their own lives.
Technical Advisory Group (TAG)
When Te Hiringa i te Mahara first started in 1998 an advisory group was established by Gardiner Parata. The membership is made up of representatives from the education sector. The role and responsibilities of this group are to:
- provide a robust critique of programme activities;
- identify and resolve at an early stage, risks;
- provide a broad as well as in-depth cultural perspective;
- provide advice and guidance from and on practitioner experience; and
- disseminate information about the programme.
The current membership is:
- Te Kepa Stirling – Strategic Adviser Matauranga Māori, School Support Services Auckland
- Te Makao Bowkett – Apiha Māori, Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA)
- Patsy Karauria – Te Puni Kokiri
- Kelli Kawhia-Conrad – Education Review Office (ERO)
- Pita Tipene – Te reo o Te Taitokerau
- Darrell Pene – Assistant HOD Māori, Rotorua Boys' High School
- Lynette Bradnam – Senior Adviser Te Tere Auraki Māori in the Mainstream, Ministry of Education
- Prue Kyle – Team Leader Professional Learning and Leadership, Ministry of Education
- Apryll Parata – Project Director, Gardiner Parata
In the next three months three additional practitioners will be invited to join the advisory group. One of these teachers will be from the South Island.
