Media studies – Lesson 1 local navigation

Lesson 1: Introduction to module

Two concepts need to be established: the structure of an ad and the idea of New Zealand in the ads.

Learning intentions

Success criteria

Activity

Start with structure of ad: students to brainstorm what you expect to see in an ad on the board with teacher.

Students are looking for ideas such as product, logo, slogan, jingle, music etc. Students may not know the actual jargon terms but should be able to identify by describing i.e. “a shot of what you are selling”; “song to go with the ad” etc.

Teacher explains new ad jargon and what the words are for the ideas.
Students complete a Mix and match handout for basic words.

Jingle:
song attached to the product ad is selling, i.e. …
Logo:
image/symbol for the product, i.e. big M for McDonald's
Product:
what the ad is selling – life insurance, burgers, shoes etc.
Target audience:
who the ad is aimed at.
Slogan:
line that is attached to the product, i.e. “…where everyone gets a bargain”.

Activity

Introduce the idea of a New Zealand ad.

Working in groups, students are given an A3 piece of paper and are to write down everything they would expect to see in a New Zealand ad. They can also draw images they would expect as well if they want.

After they have finished, giving them approximately 10 minutes, each group to feed back to the class. With shared ideas on the board with discussion. Class brainstorm on board to be copied in books.

A3 sheets to be put up on wall to be re-looked at, at the end of the module to compare predictions and expectations with what was found in ads studied.
