Pasifika Hotshots

Links to the New Zealand curriculum

The New Zealand Government's overall ICT strategy is committed to 'improving learning experiences and outcomes for all students'.

New Zealand schools have placed a premium on supporting learning through ICT and have created innovative learning environments. Pasifika Hotshots is an example of how some year 9 and 10 students undertook a video making workshop and then used their knowledge and skills to create video stories.

English in the New Zealand Curriculum

Achievement objectives – Visual language: Presenting

Using static and moving images students should use verbal and visual features to communicate information ideas, or narrative through drama, video, computer, or other technologies and media.

In achieving the objectives of understanding and using visual language students should identify important features of verbal and visual language and use them to create particular meanings and effects.

Students will be able to use and adapt production techniques and technologies to communicate information, ideas, narrative, or other messages, integrating, verbal, visual, and dramatic features to achieve a range of effects.

Within a range of technological areas and contexts, students should develop an understanding of: the use and operation of technologies, technological principles and systems and the nature of technological practice. (AOs 1, 2, 3)

Within a range of technological areas and contexts, students should develop awareness and understanding of the impacts of technology on society and the environment. (AO 8)

Digital horizons: Learning through ICT

This is the New Zealand Ministry of Education's strategy for ICT learning in schools. It follows OECD guidelines that state the education system needs to recognise, 'the enhanced breadth, richness and authenticity of learning that can be achieved through ICT'.

In developing this website the teachers and students have used CT skills to extend and enrich educational experiences through 'diverse, motivating approaches to learning'.

Experiences such as filming Pasifika Hotshots gives students opportunities to become confident and competent in using technologies and to interact with the wider community.
