The Learning Languages Series and website
The name of the Learning Languages Series (originally the International Languages Series) was changed in January 2005 to reflect the new Learning Languages curriculum area, which encompasses te reo Māori, Latin, New Zealand Sign Language, and a range of Pacific, Asian, and European languages.
The Learning Languages Series (LLS) for years 7–8 (curriculum levels 1–2) includes:
- Oui! An Introduction to French
- Ja! An Introduction to German
- Hai! An Introduction to Japanese
- ¡Sí! An Introduction to Spanish
- Hao! An Introduction to Chinese.
For some teachers, using LLS may be their first experience of teaching and learning another language. The multimedia LLS materials encourage teachers to adopt the role of facilitator in the classroom so that they learn alongside their students.
More material online
There is now extra material provided online to support the classroom resources. Visit the Learning Languages Series website in the TKI Learning Languages Community to access supplementary material for each LLS language.
This material includes:
- additional learning activities for each language – Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish
- instructions for playing the language games shown in the video An Introduction to the International Language Series
- tips for teachers, including information on other resources, assessment practices, computer tips, lists of authentic names for students to adopt, suggestions for integrating birthday and other traditions into the teaching programme, and links to other language websites.
The website also contains descriptions of the components of the classroom materials of the courses, plus information on how to obtain copies.
