School Journal – CDs
School Journal Part 1 and Part 2 2004–2005 CD
A fine model of reading aloud captures the poetry of Rachel Hayward's fantasy 'Sparklies' (1.2.05). Dame Silvia Cartwright reads her own responses to Hanahiva Rose's questions in 'Visiting the Governor-General' from the same Journal.
A Māori legend about the seasons, 'A Wife for Te Rā' (2.4.04), is retold by Moira Wairama, and backed by mood-setting music.
A child reads Kaitrin McMullin's poem 'Hey!' (2.1.05) over a haunting musical arrangement. From the same Journal, Asha Patel's article 'Bells and Butterflies' transports listeners into the story and sounds of Indian dancing.
The gentle humour in 'Percy's Song of Freedom' by Stuart Payne (2.2.05) is accentuated by clever use of music.
Janice Marriott's story 'Heartbeats in the Dark' (2.4.05) about overcoming fear is read by a child. Children also read the parts in Jaqualine Chapman's play 'In Training' from the same Journal. This 'team' are not training for quite the kind of test you might imagine.

School Journal Part 3 and Part 4 2005 CD
Music and a great reading help listeners to build a picture of the adventure and tragedy in Moira Wairama's retold legend 'Southern Lights: Tama-rereti and Te Kurakura o Hine-nui-te-pō' (3.1.05).
From the same Journal, Jane Buxton's poem 'Creepy' is read slowly, quietly, and creepily by a child, over appropriately scary music.
Cheri Pinner's story about moving from China to New Zealand, 'Against the Wind' (3.2.05), is read by a Chinese New Zealander.
Listening to Steven R. Storer's 'Baked Beans on Toast' (3.3.05) could be a good starter for discussion of Blake's difficulties in this story.
Norman Bilbrough's article about 'The Biggest Eagle in the World' (4.1.05) is read by children.
The children who read Philippa Werry's 'Stop That Punctuation!' (4.3.05) for this recording really enjoyed the experience. Have fun with this play in your classroom.
