Te Kete Kupu cover.

Tirohia Kimihia contains 3500 headwords supported by more than 6500 meanings. The definition for each headword uses high-frequency words and consistent language patterns. Clear, spacious layouts and the prominent placement of the letters of the Māori alphabet make it easy for users to find the word or words they are looking for.

Tirohia Kimihia is based on a corpus of 750 000 words of running text, compiled from texts in te reo Māori published for students since 1995 by the Ministry of Education. It will be supported by supplementary materials, including wallcharts, a teachers' handbook, and promotional material.

Tirohia Kimihia makes a powerful pairing with Te Kete Kupu, a dictionary for junior primary students. Te Kete Kupu was distributed to schools teaching in te reo Māori in term 4 of 2005. (See November 2005 issue of Resource Link Online for more details.)

Distribution

Class sets of Tirohia Kimihia are being distributed in term 1 2006 to schools with level 1 and 2 Māori-medium classes. (To enquire about Ministry of Education resources published by Huia Te Manu Tuku Kōrero, visit the Huia Te Manu Tuku Kōrero website.)
