Healthy eating
Early childhood services and schools are to receive a toolkit (a boxed set of materials) containing:
- Food and Nutrition for Healthy, Confident Kids: Guidelines to Support Healthy Eating Environments in New Zealand Early Childhood Education Services and Schools;
- an introduction to the Food and Beverage Classification System;
- practical ideas and information for your environment and to share with parents and whānau/families;
- Nutrition Fund information and a specimen application form;
- age-appropriate advice on healthy eating.
Food and Nutrition for Healthy, Confident Kids and the Food and Beverage Classification System are designed to help early childhood services, schools, and their respective communities to develop policies and procedures about food and beverages provided on site and to promote strong, consistent messages about healthy eating. Food and Nutrition for Healthy, Confident Kids contains:
- suggested processes for policy development and implementation;
- ways to establish an environment that supports healthy eating;
- approaches that help children and young people learn skills and give them opportunities to practise healthy eating and food preparation;
- strategies to encourage consistent messages about food and healthy eating;
- teaching and learning approaches.

One copy of the toolkit is being distributed in March to early childhood services, and copies to schools are on the basis of teacher numbers. Additional copies of the guidelines can be ordered from Learning Media Customer Services.
