Three new Tupu books
The Tupu series provides early childhood services and schools with resources for students who speak or are learning any of five Pasifika languages. Teachers’ notes support these resources.
Ko e Mata ‘Ikaloa ‘A Mele by Melenaite Mala‘efo‘u
This is Melenaite’s first book to be published in the Tupu series. In this Tongan story (item 31956), Mele has just lost her grandmother. Mele misses her very much and often thinks about the special times they spent together. One day, Mele is surprised when she discovers her grandmother’s favourite locket in an unexpected place. This story would especially interest students in years 5–8 but can be used at more than one curriculum level. (The Notes for Teachers are item 31983.) This title is also available as:
- Te ‘Apinga ‘Akaperepere ā Mele (Cook Islands Māori, item 31960)
- Koloa Uho Ha Mele (Niue language, item 31959)
- ‘O le ‘Oloa Tāua a Mele (Sāmoan, item 31958)
- Ko te Koa Fakapelepele a Mele (Tokelauan, item 31957).
Kātini by Maria Samuela
This new Cook Islands Māori title (item 31946) is a story about two young girls, who are meeting each other for the first time (at a concert) although their mothers are sisters. There is a lot of fun and laughter, which brings the cousins closer together. (The Notes for Teachers are item 31982.) This story would especially interest students in years 5–8 but can be used at more than one curriculum level. This story is also available as:
- Tau Kāsini (Niue language, item 31950)
- ‘O Tauūsoga (Sāmoan, item 31949)
- Ko nā Taina (Tokelauan, item 31948)
- Ko e Ongo Tokoua (Tongan, item 31947).
Feua Lototoa ha Sake by Lisa Fuemana
This Niue language title (item 31954) is the first play in the Tupu series. Sake is a young crab who doesn’t like staying home and thinks it is time for adventure. The plot is based on Sake’s attempt to find one. All his friends warn him of the dangers out in the world, but he doesn’t listen. This play would especially interest students in years 5–8 but can be used at more than one curriculum level. (The Notes for Teachers are item 31984.) This play is also available as:
- Te Kāngakāngā ā Sake (Cook Islands Māori, item 31955)
- ‘O le Evaevaga a Sani (Sāmoan, item 31953)
- Ahaahavale (Tokelauan, item 31952)
- Ko e ‘Eva ‘a Sani (Tongan, item 31951).
Ko e Mata ‘Ikaloa ‘a Mele, Kātini, and Feua Lototoa ha Sake can be heard, together with their English versions, on the next Tupu CD, which will be printed and distributed later in 2007. The CD also includes the titles published in November 2006, Ko te Aho Fiafi a o Filipo and ‘Ua O‘o ‘Ea i le Taimi?
