Ready to Read
Two new big books
Bikes by Janice Marriott
Bikes has a classic non-fiction text format and includes information about different types of bikes, how they work, how to look after them, and how to keep safe when riding. It includes a contents page, an index, bullet points, and diagrams.
Comments by the family featured in the photographs invite readers to make connections to their own experiences of bikes and to share their own opinions.
This text also supports the comprehension strategies of summarising and evaluating. Suitable for shared reading at all levels.
Item 31992.
Lāvalava by Lino Nelisi
In Lāvalava, Sofi proudly tells the reader about her family and about the different occasions when they wear their lāvalava.
As well as making strong connections to Pasifika students and their experiences, this text encourages children to share their own stories about their families and the special clothes they wear. Text features include high-frequency words, the Sāmoan words “lāvalava” and “kilikiti”, personal and possessive pronouns, and compound sentences that use “when” as a conjunction. The text also supports the comprehension strategies of summarising and of identifying main ideas, and identifying the author’s purpose.
