Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum: Draft
The long-awaited draft curriculum guidelines for teaching and learning te reo Māori in English-medium schools were launched this month. Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum: Draft has been developed specifically for primary and secondary schools where the main language of instruction is English, that is, 95 percent of all New Zealand schools. The publication of these curriculum guidelines makes te reo Māori more accessible to learners and raises awareness of the importance of te reo Māori in New Zealand, where it is an official language.
Development of these curriculum guidelines over the last three years has involved regular feedback from teachers, principals, teacher training providers, teacher union representatives, and other government agencies. Your feedback on the draft document is welcomed. (See the note on Feedback.) The final version of Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum will be published in 2008.
The curriculum guidelines are designed to be helpful, practical, and easy to use. As well as providing achievement objectives for curriculum levels 1–8, they include suggested learning and assessment activities, possible learning contexts, and glossaries of Māori and English terms. The guidelines also include background information on the reasons for teaching and learning te reo Māori and on the relationship between te reo and tikanga Māori.
Supplementary resources include online materials to help teachers with planning and with assessing all levels of the curriculum guidelines and a multimedia package for year 7–8 students and teachers. (See the article on Ka Mau te Wehi! below.)
