Pānui Whakaahua
This set of five A2-sized, full-colour posters exemplifies the sorts of mental strategies that students might use in an everyday context to find the answers to number problems. The resource set is targeted at students working at stages 5 and 6 of the Number Framework. An A4 explanatory sheet for teachers accompanies each poster, and these notes are also printed on the back of each poster. The notes make connections to the Number Framework and the pāngarau curriculum and offer starter suggestions for using the posters in the classroom.
Pikitia shows how two children use a mental strategy to work out what time the picture they are watching will finish.
In Māra Rīwai, koro and his moko find a strategy to work out how many plants they will need to plant 12 rows, with 15 plants in each row.
Kānga Waru focuses on a strategy for working out how much sugar is necessary when the recipe is increased one and a half times.
Tīpare shows how a kuia and her moko find a strategy to work out how many triangles there will be if their tāniko tīpare is 42 centimetres long.
In Papawīra, a boy saving for a new skateboard finds a strategy to work out how much more he needs to save.
