The School Journal Story Library is a series of highly illustrated “easy reading” books designed to appeal to nine- to fourteen-year-old students. Teachers’ notes for each of these titles provide background information and suggestions for discussion and follow-up activities.

Hero is a gripping account of how fifteen-year-old Caine Spick saved the life of a small boy caught in an ocean rip – an act for which he received the New Zealand Bravery Medal. The author uses a range of text forms, including a recount and interviews, to capture the drama and impact of this event from a variety of perspectives.

Keri Red are the only fourteenth grade all-girls’ soccer team in Northland. Go, Red! follows defender Alice and the rest of the team on a typical Saturday as they prepare for and play a game against a visiting team. The book includes an interview with Cara, who is team captain and also a Northland rep player.
