Social Studies Online was developed as an outcome of a professional development contract between
UNITEC Institute of Technology
and the New Zealand Ministry
of Education. In 2000-2001 it involved 50 primary and secondary schools selected from
throughout New Zealand on
criteria agreed with the Ministry. Each school
nominated a lead teacher who kept colleagues informed and involved in the
project. Lead teachers undertook an
Internet tutorial,
and then developed
a unit of learning which
was posted on the site as a permanent resource for New Zealand
Social Studies teachers.
These units were written to support delivery of
Social Studies in the New
Zealand Curriculum. Each has stated achievement objective(s) with
learning outcomes, learning and assessment activities and an assessment
schedule with assessment criteria.
The units are fully resourced, pedagogically explicit and
utilise the Internet wherever possible.
Since the original professional development contract, many more units have
been developed for all curriculum levels (including the NCEA).
The Social Studies Online with UNITEC contract ended on December 15th 2003.
All enquiries about the site should be directed to the coordinator of the Social
Science Community on TKI (socialsciences@tki.org.nz).
This material has been produced by UNITEC Institute of Technology
under contract to the Ministry of Education.
