These are some of the activities my class chose:
- Paint a donkey and make tails for
'Pin-the-tail on the donkey'. You will
need an outline of a donkey, newspaper, paint, brushes and strips of paper
for tails. Enough for one for every child in your class and extras for any
other children invited, eg. preschoolers, brothers or sisters from other
classes.
- Birthday cake making - You will need all the ingredients for making a cake
(I used a chocolate cake mix bought from the supermarket); utensils; cake
mixer and cake tin; an oven and cooling rack and icing and decorations to
decorate the cake once it has cooled. Ask a parent to be in charge of this
activity and have a group of no more than six children helping at different
stages of the cake making and decorating.
- Decorations - you will need crepe paper, scissors,
adhesive tape and staplers. Each child could make a streamer or decoration
to put around the room.
- Party hats - use long strips of stiff paper or light card. Place it
around the child's head to check for size. Cut at the right length. The
children can write their name on it and decorate with paint, buttons,
sequins, glitter etc. They could also shape the edges in interesting ways.
When the decorations are dry staple ends together.
- Table cloth - potato prints - you will need large sheets of paper or
calico to cover classroom tables. water based paints and potatoes that have
been cut in half and interesting shapes such as stars, diamonds, swirls etc,
cut out of them. Newspaper on the floor to catch paint drips. The children
place the potato prints into a tray of paint and stamp onto the
tablecloth.
- Balloons - have a parent to help blow up the balloons. Children can
decorate the balloon with permanent marker pens and instruct parent as to
where the balloon is to be hung in the classroom.
- Make
an invitation on the computer using the Microsoft Publisher
programme Wizard. The child can design their own invitation to take home to
parents, grandparents or siblings. Invite children from older classes to
assist 5 year olds with this task. Fax or E-mail messages to parents.
- Make a banner. "Happy Birthday Q-Bear". You will need a long
piece of paper that will stretch across your classroom or whiteboard. An
adult will need to write the outline and the children can paint or crayon
and dye the letters. Alternatively a banner can be made with 'Publisher
Wizard' on the computer.
- Decorate a paper plate - You will need white paper plates and water
based felt pens. The children decorate the edge of the plate.
- Have a range of activities the children can do once they have finished all
of the above - play dough, library book reading, writing, blocks, etc. Some
children work faster than others and will only disturb the class if they have
finished and have nothing to do
