The Killing Fields

The video takes approximately three one hour lessons. It may be more appropriate to identify and show only significant sections of the video rather than show the entire movie.

Learning Outcomes to focus on while watching the video:

  • Explain how government in Cambodia was organised during the rule of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

  • Explain how the dictatorship of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge affected the lives of Cambodians.

Mini Inquiry

Focus: The Impact of the Khmer Rouge on the lives of people in Cambodia.

Key questions:
Who were the Khmer Rouge and what did they believe about government? How did they treat the Cambodian people? What were some of the effects of the Khmer Rouge government on the lives of people?

Recording Information:
Provide students with a template of the Record Grid below on A3 paper or have them construct their own on a double page spread. At appropriate intervals during the movie (decide on the best points as you do your preview) stop the video and provide time for a Perception Check.

Perception Check:
Allow two minutes for students, in pairs, to compare ideas and quickly record key words, terms and symbols on their Record Grids.

Communicating Information: Students design a ten frame Cartoon Strip that describes the impact of the Khmer Rouge system of government on the lives of people in Cambodia during the time of the Killing Fields.
