Students will be able to:
- Explain how goverment in Cambodia was organised during the rule of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.
- Explain how the dictatorship of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge affected the lives of Cambodians.
- Explain how government in New Zealand is organised.
- Explain how government affects our lives.

TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Smiley Select and adapt these learning activities to best meet the needs of your students, and to fit the time available:

  1. Starter: What happens in New Zealand's Parliament?
    Students complete 2Ps and WC.

  2. Starter: Class Collage
    In groups students search through newspapers, cutting out headings and articles related to government. These are made into a group or class wall collage.

  3. What Does Government Mean?
    Students look up terms using a dictionary and create a word map.

  4. Mix and Match
    Students match terms, pictures, and definitions of types of government.

Dictatorship

  1. Dictator Business Cards
    Students investigate any 3 of 6 dictators, and create business cards for them.

  2. Cambodia PowerPoint Presentation
    A background to Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot - questions and activities with links to internet sites to gather information. Broken into three parts:

    Note: Each section may take some time to download - be patient.
    If you don't have PowerPoint you will need to download the Powerpoint Viewer.

  3. Extension Activity
    Time traveller to Year Zero.

  4. Pol Pot Cartoon
    Interpreting a cartoon on Pol Pot, Hitler and Stalin.

  5. Borany's Story
    Read Borany's Story aloud, or use senior students to read to groups, or buy copies of Borany's Story from Replay Radio.

    Students record changes in Borany's life before and during Khmer Rouge occupation (see Borany's Story suggested answers). They then write a report explaining how the Khmer Rouge government of Pol Pot affected the lives of Cambodians like Borany.

  6. Killing Fields cartoon record
    As students watch the video The Killing Fields they make a cartoon style record of the key events.

  7. Killing Fields Activities
    Following the video students complete their choice of follow up activities.

  8. Pol Pot's System of Government
    How was it organised?

Democracy

  1. Jigsaw of key terms and words related to central and local government in New Zealand.

  2. Who are New Zealand's political leaders?
    Students identify current leaders in key political positions.

  3. Functions of Government
    Students unjumble the key areas of government and record as an illustrated star diagram. The solution is provided.

  4. Parliament and Government

  5. Who's Who in Parliament?

  6. What do MPs do?

  7. Our Electoral System
    Students follow links to gather information and complete worksheets on How the Government is Elected, Enrolling to Vote and Voting on Election Day.

  8. How are laws made?
    Students investigate how laws are made.

  9. Government and Us
    Having a say in government.

  10. Government and Us Part 2
    How does government affect our lives?

  11. Extension: Political Cartoons Three Steps for Interpretation
    Students copy 3 steps, and interpret current political cartoons which teacher provides. See Teacher instructions.

  12. Wrap Up - Mock Parliament
    Run a class Parliamentary session complete with Question Time and debate on a social issue.

  13. Follow Up
    Investigate Local Government.
    And/or: In groups, students create posters comparing the two systems of government that they have studied - dictatorship and democracy.
