TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  1. Starter - Picture disclosure
Choose a picture from the Photos. Print off a colour photograph from Winter or Weather and disclose parts for students to discuss where it might be, the weather, conditions, problems of living in this environment and how they might be overcome.

  2. Pack your bags
Read the first three paragraphs this story written by traveller Richard Byrd.

Students imagine they are off to join an Antarctic expedition for six weeks. In groups of four they write up a list (first draft) of the things they would take with them.

Oonce students have completed this, check out the Clothing and Equipment Checklist.

Students can discuss both lists, then add or subtract from their first draft if they wish.

Read this journal extract - The journey by sea by scientist Ann Devereaux.

  3. Pictionary
Develop vocabulary using this variation on the Pictionary game.

  4. Quiz
Go to Antarctica: The Frozen Continent. Let students visit different parts of the site to find information about Antarctica and then try the Quiz.

  5. Early Explorers
In groups of four, students investigate an Antarctic explorer of their choice. Try for a range of explorers to complete three journal entries their explorer may have written.

  6. Who knows?
Provide a Who Knows Grid for each student. Their task is to find out why these different groups visit Antarctica.

Students find as quickly and quietly as possible, someone who can give them the information for each square. It's a good idea to set a maximum number of squares to be completed by one person.

As they find the information they note the person's name and answer in the square.

Share the information in small groups or as a class.

    Who goes to Antarctica?

  7. Inquiry
    Assessment Activity
Conduct an Inquiry into how different groups of people view and use Antarctica.

Gather all the presentations and display them on the classroom wall under the heading: "How different groups view and use Antarctica"

  8. Threats to Antarctica
Shared reading: Broni Stephen Southern Quest Part 3 Leaving it Clean School Journals: 1990 Pt 4 No 3.

In groups of four, discuss things that are threats to the Antarctic environment, and complete a bubble chart. Share ideas as a class and add extra information about threats to the bubble chart. These sites are worth a look.

  9. Treaty of Antarctica
Visit The Antarctic Treaty to see how a group of countries are trying to protect the Antarctic. In pairs, read about the treaty, jot down three good things that the treaty does, then share your thoughts with another pair.

  10. Role play
In pairs, work out a scenario on the ice that shows how a group of people you have studied view and use the Antarctic. Practise your scene, then present it to the class.
