In these examples of situations involving service providers explain:
  • whether the problem is minor or major
  • whether the consumer is entitled to compensation and
  • whether the consumer can claim for costs incurred by the problem.

You take in your stereo to be repaired. Two months later you are still waiting for the stereo to be returned. Why can you take action against the service provider?

The qualified painter who painted your bedroom spilt paint all over the carpet. Explain why you can lay a complaint against the service provider.

You are told that it would cost no more than $50.00 to fix your television set. When you collected it, you were charged $120.00 for parts and labour. Explain what your rights are in this situation.

The painter told you that s/he would have your room painted in no more than 5 days. Two weeks later he is still busy painting your bedroom. What action can you take?

You explained clearly to the hairdresser how you wanted your hair coloured. Your hair turns out much darker. Why can you take action against the service provider?

You buy a camera for $199. Sometimes the shutter sticks.You have had it back to the shop twice but they say they can't find any fault with it.

You book your motorised scooter into the garage for a maintenance check. Three days later the scooter breaks down a few kilometres from your house. You have to have it transported back by truck to your house and you have to catch a taxi back home.

You had a filling done by your dentist two months ago. The filling falls out while you are on holiday in another town. You have to pay for a new filling from another dentist.
