Treasure hunt
Needs to be prepared at least a week before.
Decorate 5 or 6 clay flowerpots with hieroglyphics and designs. [Use paint
or permanent markers.] Put the pots in a paper bag and gently hit with a
hammer. Shake the bag. Carefully put the pieces into a tub of dirt and bury.
Use small digging tools and paint brushes to carefully excavate the shards
of the pots. Sort the pieces and glue together those pieces that seem to
fit.
Mystery objects
Place a mystery object inside a shoebox. Wrap the object in many layers of
paper and other wrappings. Secure the lid and use hieroglyphics to give the
children clues of what is inside. Have enough boxes for one for each group.
Have the children guess what is inside and write their guesses down with
reasons justifying their guess.
Play 21 questions. The teacher can only answer yes or no to questions asked
by the archaeologists (children) in their attempt to guess the object.
Carefully excavate (unwrap) and preserve the object and materials it was found
in.
Was anyone right?
Here are some of the things we used as mystery objects: egg beater, whisk,
bicycle pump, moustache cup, Ronald McDonald toy, dip pen and nib, stapler,
adhesive tape dispenser. Many of the children contributed mystery objects from
home.
