Place A3 sheets of newsprint around the room headed:
North Island; South Island (and Stewart Island); Pacific; Australia; North
America (USA and Canada); South America; Britain; Europe; China; Japan;

they enjoyed most at each place.
- What does it mean?
Tourism: the practice of travelling to and visiting places for pleasure and
relaxation. This is one dictionary's definition.
What other definitions of tourism are there?
In pairs or small groups, students find the meaning (start with
Onelook) of each of the following
"touristy" terms and create a
Word Shape for each term:
- Tourism
- Ecotourism
- Adventure tourism
- Package tours
- Backpackers
- Who are they?
Think about tourists who might come to New Zealand. Create an image of one
tourist on a sheet of newsprint.
Some Starters:
- Who is she/he?
- Where are they from?
- Why have they come here?
- Where are they going?
- How long will they stay in New Zealand?
- How much will they spent while they are here?
- What will they do while they are here?
- How will they impact on the environment?
Take Only Photos, Leave Only Footprints
- Travelling Responsibly
Ensure that all students have access to Earthwise Journeys: Ecotourism
information from the UN General assembly. What is Socially
Responsible Travel?
- Perception Check
What are the characteristics of socially responsible travel, more commonly
known as ecotourism?
Decide on a set of FIVE key criteria that
you could use to evaluate a tourist attraction on its degree of social responsibility
or ecotourism activities.

Students use their criteria to evaluate a range of
tourist attractions.

responsible tourist resort. Use Ecotourism
information from the UN General assembly to help you.
