Students should work in pairs or small groups so they can discuss the meaning of key terms.

  1. Define the term "socially responsible travel" using a CD Map or a Word Map.

  2. Create a cartoon strip or simplified storyboard to show FIVE significant effects of regular tourism (tourism that is NOT socially responsible) on people and places.

  3. Write a series of simple How To... Guides for tourists.

Pamphlet 1: How To Be a Socially Responsible Tourist.
Your guide should identify at least ten things tourists could do to make sure that tourism benefits both the people and the place that they are visiting. Like any good pamphlet it should have a title page, headings, a balance of visuals and text and a clear, strong message.

Pamphlet 2: How to Prepare to be Socially Responsible Tourist.
This pamphlet should identify at least eight homework tasks that tourists could complete before they head off on their trip so that both they, and the people they meet on their travels, benefit from the experience.

  4. Swap pamphlets around the class and enjoy each others' work.
