Although specifically dealing with Otago and Southland, much of it is generic.

It is divided into eight time periods:

  1. Moa hunter and Kai Tahu -before 1750
  2. European exploration (Capt Cook) - 1750-1790
  3. Australian influence (sealers and whalers) - 1790-1840
  4. Scottish settlement - 1840-1860
  5. Gold rushes - 1860-1870
  6. Vogel - 1870-1880
  7. Outflow -1880-1940
  8. Since WWII - 1940-1996

Within these eight time periods are six common themes:

  1. Where people came from
  2. The work they came to do
  3. The settlements they made
  4. The role of women and children
  5. The effects on the landscape
  6. Transportation

Each segment of the CD-ROM contains photographs, paintings and drawings, and an associated study guide.

So you can see that "Gold" is one eighth of the CD-ROM. It is brought up to date with the modern-day Macraes mine.
