Provide a copy of this
Timeline for students.
In pairs students construct a Visual Timeline illustrating events and
actions related to the arrival and treatment of Chinese in New Zealand from
1860 until the present day.
Encourage creativity - the timeline may be a dragon or a design based on
gold mining tools for example.
- Select an area of wall display space, preferably along a wall at about
eye level. Staple, tape or pin large (A1 or A2) sheets of black paper -
sugar paper is fine - in a long strip along the wall. This is going to form
the background for the timeline.
- Students identify key events from the
Immigration Timeline and each pair
prepares a Key Events Card (A5 is a practical size) for one or more events.
Each card should have a title and a brief outline of the key event - enough
information for other students to be able to create an image from.
- Swap event cards.
- Next, using coloured paper, glue, tape, string, pipe cleaners and other
suitable materials each pair creates a visual image representing their
event. 3D images have much more impact then simple images drawn on paper -
so encourage more creativity.
- Each finished image is attached to the timeline in the correct
chronological order along with the summary of key points. Once the Timeline
has been completed it may be appropriate for each group to briefly explain
their image to the class. The completed timeline provides a valuable
reference for students as they work through the rest of the unit.
