Communications on Gallipoli itself had broken down; the place was chaos and no-one had any real idea of casualty numbers, the death toll or the location of survivors.

By the end of the campaign, 8556 New Zealanders had served on Gallipoli with the NZEF. 2721 died. 4752 were wounded (some more than once). The 8556 men who served on Gallipoli made 14,720 landings.

Note: New Zealand and Australia were not the only countries fighting at Gallipoli. The ANZAC forces were actually quite small in relation to the British and French forces. There was also a Gurkha (Indian) contingent involved in the campaign. The Australians suffered 26,111 casualties of whom 8,141 were killed; Britain lost a total of 120,000 casualties; France 27 000; and the Turkish total was probably about 300,000. Their official total of 86,692 dead and 164,617 wounded or sick was an under-estimation.
