N.B. Through Aboriginal Australia’s 40,000+ year history, there have been variations in Aboriginal cultural values across the continent This stems from the fact that there were about 700 Aboriginal nations in existence at the time of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Therefore, these cards should be considered as a broad and basic introduction to Aboriginal cultural values.
- Sort the values cards into 3 cultural groups: Aboriginal Australia, White Australia, Te Ao o te Maori – Aotearoa New Zealand. The cards relate to the following core elements of culture: language, land, learning, food and medicine, art and craft, family, children, shelter/homes, spirituality/religion, clothing, tools/weapons/utensils, money/economy, work, time and space.
- Use the information on the cards to create a triple Venn diagram to compare aspects of Aboriginal culture with that of White Australian culture and Maori culture of Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Whole class feedback: What are some of the most significant differences between your culture and Aboriginal culture? Consider concepts of nomadic, semi-nomadic and sedentary lifestyles, hunting and gathering, the Dreamtime. What are some of the similarities?
