Customs Duties

For many travellers their most memorable experience of Customs is - paying duty or taxes on goods that they are trying to import into the country.

It is the Government that decides what taxes and import duties will be; it is Customs' responsibility to enforce the Government's regulations.

  1. What is...?
    What are customs duties and tariffs?
    What is Protectionism? What are some of the BBC Trade argument for and against protectionism Governments setting customs duties and tariffs?
    What are some of the arguments against?
    What is Free Trade?

    • How can Protectionism influence people's access to resources, goods and services?
    • How can Free Trade influence people's access to resources, goods and services?

  2. Some Six Hat Thinking
    Organise the class into small groups of 4-6 students. Each group discusses the two questions using the Six Thinking Hats approach and prepares a Thesis-Proof Chart to summarise their findings.
